The
Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts (AFGA) is the most comprehensive
collection of works of art on paper in the western United States. It
began as the vast print and drawing collection of Mr. and Mrs. Moore
Achenbach, given to the City of San Francisco in 1948. Today AFGA
encompasses over 80,000 prints documenting key areas of the history of
printmaking from the 15th century to the present. The collection also
includes over 3,000 drawings. Indian miniature paintings, Japanese
prints and drawings, a theater and dance collection, posters, rare
books, and 19th-century photography are represented as well. The
collection's extraordinary size and scope are the result of the gifts
of generous donors and careful purchases by curators from a limited
endowment. AFGA offers a continuing program of changing exhibitions
from the permanent and loan collections. An extensive graphics
reference library and computerized collection database, including
digitized images, are available to the public by appointment. (To make
an appointment call 415.750.3679).
The Western Regional Paper
Conservation Laboratory, located adjacent to the Achenbach Foundation,
is one of the finest facilities of its kind in the country. It serves
the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, other institutions, and private
individuals. Members of the AGAC receive a 10% discount on conservation
services. For information, call 415.750.7691.
